Country Tour 2 : OVOP Group

2月1日、前日に首都から合流したOVOP（一村一品運動）デザイン隊員のきよちゃんとOVOPグループを訪問しました。オフィスからすぐの、パワーストーン加工グループです。私の任務は一村一品とはあんま関係ないけど、個人的にパワーストーンの恩恵にあやかっていると感じるので、便乗しちゃいました。後付になるかもしれないが、同じ街でどんなプロジェクトにJICAが関わっているのかも知りたかったというのも、・・・ある！ははは。

前任者からローズクォーツが取れる話は聞いていたけど、Boma訪問して即パワーストーンに関わる人に会えるだなんて、私は本当に運のいい人間だと思います。

On 1st Feb, I visited OVOP (One villege one project) group in Boma. There are a several groups in Mzimba districts. With one of my batch mate whose assignment is OVOP designing, I visited the closest one from my office. The stone cutting group which produce power stones!!! As I had heard of them from my predecessor, I am soooooo happy to be able to visit once I reached to Boma!!!

石の加工場は、私のオフィスと同じくらいの小さい平屋の中にありました。ただ、部屋の中には、いくつかの石を加工する機械があり

ます。OVOP運動の高まりで国が170万円かけて寄付してくれたらしい。マラウィの金銭感覚にしたら、どんだけ巨額なの？！っていう。大統領のOVOPに対するノリノリ感がすんごい伝わった！！

・・・どっこい、実際そこで働く人は、3名しかいません。しかも、きちんとした商品を作れる人はそのうちの一人だけ。やり方をほかの二人に教えている最中だとはいうけど、いつになったらその二人が洗練された加工技術者になるのかは、謎。

Stone cutting place is not big at all. The size of the place is same like my office. But there are several machines to cut and polish the stones which costed approximately U$ 20,000. What a big amount! It describes how much the president himself is motivated with OVOP. Of course it was donated from the government. Despite the good facility, there are only three guys in its group and only one guy is sophisticated enough to complete to make it beautiful enough to be the power stones, although he says he is teaching how to do to other two guys.

そもそもの、人が集まらない理由としては、組織化して働くことにメリットを皆さん感じないかららしい。皆、テンデンバラバラに商売をしちゃってるのね。資金集めとか、情報共有とか、OVOPグループとしてやったらもっと効率的にいくんじゃないかって私は思ってしまうけど。実際のところ、南アフリカ、ドイツ、タイなどから商品納入の相談があったそうだけど、生産量が足りなくて話がうまくいかなかったそうな。残念だよね。

石自体はとってもきれいだし、いろんな種類が埋まっている。道端の石ころだってクリスタルなくらいだし！！ビジネスのソースとして、かなりポテンシャルはあると思うんだけどなぁ。けど、いろんな問題が絡んでいるから、ものすごく遅々とした歩みで進んでいくのが現実なんだと思う。

The reason is that other people do not find any advantages to work cooperatively as group. Each one just do the stone business individually. If they worked together as OVOP, they could do business much more efficiently with fundraising or collecting information. For example, some stone company in South Africa, Germany and Thailand have contacted them how much stones they can arrange for exporting. But it couldn't succeeded as the business because they could not prepare for the enough processed stones to meet their expectation.

The stones, themselves, are really beautiful and they can dig a lot of stones like Rose Quartz, crystal, and amethyst. So I really think this business has much potential and it would be good business if those problems were solved, although it may take long time.
